[edit]I have cleaned up this page and provided as accurate information as I can, but I am not an ecologist and the phrase "realized niche width" does not come up often outside of journals that are not free to access. Does anyone with a more in-depth knowledge of the field have an opinion on this? is niche width more similar to realized niche width than I indicated? It seems that the two terms are often used interchangably, whether correctly or not.Glitch010101 18:56, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)
"Realized niche" is defined relative to "fundamental niche". "Fundamental niche" is the maximum enviornmental range over which a species, in the absence of competition or predation, could possibly survive. "Realized niche" is that portion of the "fundemental niche" that is actually occupied by a species, when competitors or predators are present.
