Picture
[edit]Somebody should add a picture to this article. Plus, it would be easy to integrate the NBA.com article into this one. Also, his recent feat over Red Aubauch should be included. User: Mmmmhhhhmmm 1:48, 5 February 2006
His official NBA bio picture has been added. This is probably the best picture to use from a copyright standard but, IMO, it is old and bad and inaccurate as he ia wearing a Warriors' jersey. If a picture of him in a suit could be found without copyright problems that would be ideal. Eluchil404 02:04, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
It's amazing that NBA.com still uses his Warriors' picture on his coach bio. The NBA doesn't have a single suited photo of Johnson? aww 15:09, 9 June 2006 (UTC)
Playoffs
[edit]"During the playoffs in the Conference Finals versus Phoenix, his wife Cassandra Johnson was involved in a dispute with Phoenix Suns fans" -- Is this really relevant to his coaching career? It seems rather random. --Trypsin24 21:02, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
I agree with Trypsin. Especially since nothing came of it. I vote for taking it out. aww 17:58, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
I have removed the "Cassandra Johnson" reference, as well as the Bill P. quote from Around the Horn. I'm not sure why the AtH quote keeps getting put back. An off-hand comment by one commentator on a talk show really isn't all that notable, instructive, or descriptive. aww 22:12, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
1st African-American Championship coach
[edit]Will Avery be the 1st African-American coach to win if Dallas goes all the way? If so obviously an important stat.
Good question, but nope, he won't be the first. Lenny Wilkens pops to mind. aww 21:55, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
Actually, Bill Russell coached the Celtics to victory in 1968 and 1969, but that was while he was still a player for the Celtics. Al Attles was the first African-American coach that was not playing to lead his team to a championship (Warriors in 1975). Wilkens' Sonics won in 1979.
Ongoing offensive language
[edit]The back and forth offensive language and revert war really needs to stop. Clearly there is a disagreement over the intended paragraph, but beyond that, the language used in the edit summaries is just unacceptable for a public forum. If folks want to discuss why the paragraph should or shouldn't be present, please do so on the talk page. aww 13:38, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
- I concur. I've requested at WP:AN/I that these offensive edit summaries be removed from the page history. Cheers, Lbbzman 14:03, 14 June 2006 (UTC)
"Greatest Assist Man"
[edit]Ok, the random quote has been inserted about two dozen times now, and it still seems to be fairly absurd.
- "According to Bill Plaschke, sportswriter for the Los Angeles Times, Johnson is known as the "Greatest Assist Man of All-Time." This was stated on an episode of Around The Horn during the close of the 2004-05 NBA season."
Can anyone verify this sportswriter even said this? Why would he say this? I love Avery, but there are twenty-seven other people with more assists than him all-time - is there any point to this statement? Kuru talk 03:39, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
There is still no point to the statement, and the above "offensive language" was also all about this one issue. I don't get it at all. aww 15:01, 16 June 2006 (UTC)
Cleanup
[edit]I did some clean up - largely in trying to "incorporate" the St. Augustine's H.S. information. Not sure what else people had in mind. aww 16:08, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
5'11"?
[edit]Please. I've seen this man up close and if he was even two inches taller than I was, that would've been too much. (I'm 5'8" tall.) I daresay that he is at most maybe an inch taller than I am, an assertion I stand even firmer by after having met David Robinson in person and realizing I meet up with him at the same point Avery Johnson did when the two were teammates. Voice
[edit]Avery has a unique voice but I do not know how to describe it. Is is a regional accent or something to to with his vocal cords or both? His voice is his trademark and it should be mentioned briefly, but how could it be described? Any thoughts? -jon in California
- I have family from all over Louisiana and I can tell you that it's more than a regional accent. - Razer 04:19, 8 May 2007 (UTC)
