Photos

[edit]

The current photo is pubic domain because it is a state 'mugshot'. From what I have been able to gather, 'mugshots' that have been released by the police are considered public domain. If that is correct then the police booking photograph from her arrest on August 16 1969, which is on the internet, would be public domain. Would anyone care to comment?

In any case I think a more accurate photograph of Van Houten as she is today would help the article. If someone could take a recent photo of her and upload it, then it could replace the current photo. I think a new photo should ideally show her by herself, and looking toward the camera with a neutral expression. Information on what is involved in uploading images is at Help:Introduction to uploading images/1. Overagainst (talk) 13:17, 19 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Uh, she's in prison? How would you suppose your very specific instructions on how she is to be photographed be accomplished? Those instructions make me wonder what your motives are in editing this article and bring all sorts of NPOV related questions to mind. Do you have some connection to her or to any of her lawyers? John from Idegon (talk) 20:48, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No, I have no connection to her apart from editing the article. It may be possible to take photographs of people in prison, some people may already have such, but it would be inappropriate to have one in which she does not have a neutral expression. She is 65, the current photograph is rather misleading. An up to date photograph from any source (including prison authorities) would be necessarily be more NPOV.Overagainst (talk) 21:50, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Guess you don't understand how either prison or copyright works. You cannot just go take a picture of someone in prison. Altho some prisons have inmates designated as photographers to take pictures of the inmates for them to buy and send home or to lovers or where ever, those images belong to the prison. They are required by law to protect the inmate's privacy and could not release them. Photos taken by journalists are copyrighted. Not gonna happen, ever, unless she goes out of the prison to go to court, and even then, she would never appear in a public space other than the courtroom and you would have to have the judge's permission to take a photo. And I am sorry, about the angle, etc, being somehow necessary for a NPOV, the opposite is true. A posed picture is the photographer's POV of how the subject should be portrayed. It is anything but NPOV. John from Idegon (talk) 21:59, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You are saying there can't be a more up to date photo. But if one is uploaded with the proper permission I don't see a problem with using it.Overagainst (talk) 22:17, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nah - photos should reflect the utter travesty of her life and her heinous crimes.50.111.50.240 (talk) 17:27, 13 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Second Re-tial section

[edit]

This section mentions that she was released on bond during that time, but doesn't mention the dates. Also, the references do not refer to the second retrial at all! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.215.115.31 (talk) 17:20, 15 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Parole Hearings Layout

[edit]
The Mark Chapman piece has done an excellent job of itemising each parole hearing and noting remarks from the panel. Not an authority on Van Houten, but perhaps interested parties might look at the Chapman entry and consider a more organized, informative approach. The name Brunner in Murders of Sharon Tate and friends

[edit]

In the section 'Murders of Sharon Tate and friends,' the name Brunner is mentioned randomly for the first--and only--time (the paragraph opens with "On August 8, 1969, Brunner was arrested for credit card fraud."). Perhaps the full name appeared in an earlier section that was subsequently deleted? In any case, the name Brunner appears only once in the entire article, which doesn't seem to add to the story or serve any useful purpose for being there. Of course I could do a Google search of who Brunner is, but I think that underscores my point. The name isn't even linked to another Wikipedia article.giggle (talk) 10:02, 19 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
