Phil Tanis

[edit]

Regarding whether Phil Tanis can be called America's youngest mayor -- this is a problematic claim as phrased for several reasons. 1) Marc Molinaro was elected mayor of the village of Tivoli, new York at the age of 18. [1] 2) There have been other 23 year-olds elected mayor of cities (in Michigan, let alone all of America): Michael Guido of Dearborn, Michigan [2] in 1977. olderwiser 19:19, Oct 27, 2004 (UTC)

As I recall, he was described as the youngest mayor at that time. Tverbeek 19:40, 27 Oct 2004 (UTC)

CORRECTION : Michael Guido was elected to the Dearborn City Council in 1977 at age 23. He was not elected mayor of Dearborn, MI until 1985, at the age of 31

This article contradicts itself. Who is the current mayor? Is it Phil Tanis or Albert H. McGeehan? Both are claimed to be the current mayor of Holland.

Phil Tanis hasnt been mayor for a while, Al McGeehan has been mayor for at least 3 terms, if not more. BeckyAnne(talk) 02:08, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Tanis only served one term (1987-1989). During that time he was in the National Enquirer beng the youngest mayor at the time (he was also a Hope College student then). McGeehan has been mayor since 1993. (I'm going by year the election was held. Even though I live in town I have no idea when the terms actually start) Dwp49423 (talk) 01:35, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

demographics

[edit]
  • In demographics it has this..." 78.18% White, 2.53% African American, 0.58% Native American, 3.56% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 12.41% from other races, and 2.72% from two or more races. 22.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race." That adds up to more than 100%. I'm confused... 78% white + 22% hispanics = 100%. what about other races?
Are you hispanic and are you white, black, yellow or polka dot are separate census questions. YOu cannot add the two together. Hispanics may be white, black, Native, etc. for the other question as they choose to declare themselves. Rmhermen 02:26, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Holland has alot of bi-racial couples. How are those children counted? that could be the reason. Dwp49423 (talk) 01:36, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Comet Biela

[edit]

I was thinking that the Comet Biela theory probably shouldn't be featured on this page. It is a pretty far-fetched theory, and one that has no evidence to support it. Triphook 04:17, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dutch

[edit]

Why is there no mention of Betsy DeVos under the "Notable people" section? Is Holland, MI unofficially trying to disown one of its most important and influential Dutch people? This is not a rhetorical question. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.21.15.169 (talk) 14:48, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Do people still talk Dutch in Holland?

There are some people who do, but it's mostly grandparent- or great-grandparent-age people, and there are those heritage buffs that do all things Dutch for the sake of Tulip Time. Holland, MI is very American: mostly English, with a growing population of Spanish-speaking Hispanics. —BazookaJoe 12:47, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mmm, okay, thanks. I really didn't expect that so few people would talk Dutch. Dutch people love to maintain their traditions and language and that's why I expected that there are still a lot of people who talks Dutch as second language.

I really can't say how common Dutch language is, but there was some area politician who introduced a bill to the state legislature by speaking in Dutch. I think, ironically, the bill was about making English the official language in Michigan. I don't recall the politician's name though. olderwiser 13:29, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I, as a person from the Netherlands, don't really see what you are saying. So, about who are you talking?

It is a Holland/Western Michigan area politician, I do not recall his name. sorry. olderwiser 13:50, 12 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I grew up in Holland and the only people I know who speak Dutch (at least more than a few words) are people who lived in the Netherlands.

Racial Separation

[edit]

Whoever is inserting all of the comments about lack of minority representation and segregation and such, please give it a rest. Wikipedia is not a place for editorial social commentary. If you can cite a source suggesting that newsworthy racial problems have been a significant problem, then do so. Triphook (talk) 19:11, 3 October 2008 (UTC) I have been there and the comments of inhospitable treatment of people of color has merit. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.100.135.217 (talk) 23:19, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV

[edit]

I have been seeing lately many opinions slip into this article. Let's please try to keep things to facts. As a Holland resident, I can't help but notice all the negative little opinions slipping in about it being a majority Dutch community, (alleged) under-representation of minorities, etc, which may have some factual backing, but are not facts in and of themselves. There have not been any overt events or ongoing policies of repression in Holland, so we can't point to any specific policy or event that might suggest any racism. Now, if there are certain events that have occurred that might suggest some sort of racial problems going on, feel free to put them up. But don't just spout off opinions and make them out to be facts

I'm surprised to see this article tagged for NPOV. Though, after reading the introduction and the culture section, it seems to me this article is not neutral. There is a biased tone in the writing against Dutch culture. I vote we either find facts to support these claims, or remove them from the article. Even if we do have facts, some of these statements are hardly encyclopedic and don't warrent being mentioned. For example "Appointments and Management level jobs are keep in line with this founding doctrine by the elected officials" doesn't really help the reader understand what Holland Michigan is about. It is highly opininated and adds little to the overall article. In fact, I'm going to remove that statement now. If anyone objects, they can revert my edit, but please make a comment on this talk page as to your rationality. --Pchov (talk) 19:33, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

History section

[edit]

"After a cultural clash with the new Dutch, settlers relocated to Northport, Michigan."

This sentence is unclear to me - is this saying that there was a cultural clash between the Ottawa and the Dutch settlers, resulting in a some (but not all) of the settlers permanently relocating to Northport? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.54.139.39 (talk) 08:43, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
