Condolences
[edit]You will be greatly missed, Austin. Your early contributions to the growth of this community, and to its community spirit, were always appreciated by all who benefited from them. You were always quick to lend a hand, and you were content with doing a quietly competent job. As list administrator of the occasionally contentious Wikimedia-l mailing list, you kept things running smoothly with a light and sure hand. Rest in peace. -- Asaf Bartov, Wikimedia Foundation Ijon (talk) 13:50, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
I will remember you Austin. You are part of the sweet memories of my early years on Wikipedia and I have not forgotten our first meet in Frankfurt in 2005. Rest in peace my friend. Anthere (talk) 14:28, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for all you did for our community. I will miss you, friend. --ragesoss (talk) 14:56, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for everything you did: for me, for us, for everyone. Hasta la vista, amigo.--Brad Patrick (talk) 14:57, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
Austin, thank you so much for your commitment to our movement, and your kind spirit. Your actions speak louder than words. You rescued Wikimania Gdansk from bureaucratic collapse by acting as troubleshooter on location for a frantic month, together with Finne. That and your well-advised moderation of our public debate forum impressed me much. You surely made a difference in our endeavor that makes a difference to the world. I remember first meeting you in Boston, during my first Wikimania, in 2016. We've always had good relations and I remember you fondly. I was really saddened and surprised to hear of your passing... I will always remember the day in Leiden a few years back, when we drove bikes around the city and you showed me all the sights. I remember stumbling upon you and Finne in Masada in Israel after Wikimania in Haifa. I'm sorry you had to go... you will be remembered. Thanks for everything! --Filip (§) 16:43, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
Austin, always ready to get things done and get them done right, whether anyone knew about it or not. I'll not be long-winded this time, it is an honor to have worked with you, thank you. --Michael Snow (talk) 17:12, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
It was a pleasure interacting with you during the preparatory work of the Gdansk Wikimania, and also as a mailing list moderator.--Ymblanter (talk) 17:22, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
Thank you for your service, Austin. My thoughts are with your family and friends. Annaproject (talk) 17:57, 18 December 2017 (UTC)

A real shock. I can't help thinking of when we met by chance in Masada after Wikimania Haifa. Condolences to your close ones. Nemo 21:36, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
It might be nice to do some sort of effort in his honor. I once in the past helped prepare an old PD book for wikisource in such an effort. If anyone knows of any works there that might be appropriate in this case, or can add one if wikisource doesn't have it yet, maybe ping me and I can see what I can do. It ain't much, maybe, but the finished proofread work should be available for some time on the net as a visible memorial. John Carter (talk) 21:56, 18 December 2017 (UTC)
My condolences, May he rest in peace. Ladsgroupoverleg 22:07, 18 December 2017 (UTC)

Oh, goodness... what a fearless friend and decent person you were. I have the warmest memories and regards for our periodic adventures; we all benefited from your steadfast support. Rest well. – SJ + 06:59, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
Grateful to have known you. Very sad and shocked about the early loss.--Wing (talk) 07:22, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
I do have to write a few more: Dear Austin, you are a Texan moved to Europe, a migrant just like me; And you are one of the first generation Wikimedians, just like me. I had always felt a kind of soul brotherhood between us. When I read the news of your passing I was so shocked that I don't know what to think. The first thing that came into my mind was the following song by the Manic Street Preachers:
The world is full of refugees
They're just like you and just like me
But as people we have a choice
To end the void with all it's force
...
Fare well my little brother, thanks for everything--Wing (talk) 07:33, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
It has taken me a few days to fully realize that you are gone. May the road ahead be light and smooth and full of arguments about why this and not that. I will miss the times together I never knew to make for us, and cherish the ones we had. All my love, Delphine / notafish (talk) 10:17, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
Hi Austin, I am sad you can't hear me anymore, but nevertheless I sincerely want to thank you for all the things you've done for our movement, for free knowledge and for your contributions to our local organization in The Netherlands. Grijz (talk) 11:01, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
We didn't meet in this life or may be we did in one of the movements' events but who cares! Reading all the condolences messages and your decision to donate your organs after death made me write this short message. Dear Austin, may your soul rest in peace.
